One of the exciting commemorative projects for the Castle's 900th anniversary in 2003 was the creation of a new professional standard 18-hole putting course within its extensive grounds. One of only two such courses in England, it has been designed and implemented by noted golf architect, Weller Design.

The course is now open for Castle residents offering guests the opportunity not only to sharpen up their green's play, but a tranquil and imaginative new garden in which to stroll. With an impressive water cascade and two new lakes, it is a quiet haven in which to watch the wildlife or sit and relax in one of three gazebos, each boasting superb views to the South Downs or across the course to the Castle.

Many visitors simply wish to wander through the beautiful formal gardens contained within the Castle walls. The medieval stonework, rose-covered arches and topiary - dating from the 1920’s - form an evocative backdrop to the colour and fragrance within the perennial borders. Koi carp laze deep in the ponds in the upper courtyard where Camellias and Magnolias shelter and provide a delightful setting for afternoon tea and aperitifs.
